Exploratory tunnelling for SSE Renewables’ Coire Glas project, the UK’s first large-scale pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) scheme to be developed in 40 years, has been completed. The proposed Coire Glas storage development would have an installed capacity of 1,300MW and be capable of delivering 30GWh of long-duration electricity storage.
Located on the shores of Loch Lochy in the Scottish Highlands, between Fort William and Inverness, SSE’s proposed Coire Glas pumped storage hydro project would be the first such scheme to be built in the UK in 40 years.
As a result, pumped storage hydro is a critical enabling technology for the wider deployment of the renewable energy the UK needs. SSE Renewables is progressing a development pipeline of pumped storage hydro projects in the UK.
