Pumped-storage hydroelectricity (PSH), or pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES), is a type of hydroelectric energy storage used by electric power systems for load balancing. A PSH system stores energy in the form of gravitational potential energy of water, pumped from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation.
Pumped storage hydropower projects use electricity to store potential energy by moving water between an upper and lower reservoir. Using electricity from the grid to pump water from a lower elevation, PSH creates potential energy in the form of water stored at an upper elevation, which is why it is often referred to as a “water battery”.
