The intermittent nature of renewable energy poses challenges to the stability of the existing power grid. Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) that stores energy in the form of high-pressure air has the potential to deal with the unstable supply of renewable energy at large scale in China.
On March 31, the second phase of the 100 MW/200 MWh energy storage station, a supporting project of the Ningxia Power’s East NingxiaComposite Photovoltaic Base Project under CHN Energy, was successfully connected to the grid. This marks the completion and operation of the largest grid-forming energy storage station in China.
Currently, a 50 MW/200 MWh non-supplementary fired CAES power plant is under construction in Jintan salt district, Jiangsu province, where abundant underground salt caverns are available for energy storage . The system electro-electric conversion test efficiency is over 58%.
