Sweden could benefit from carbon dioxide storage opportunities abroad. Carbon capture and storage (CCS), including bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), could contribute to climate change mitigation strategies. However, the 2020s is not the first time that CCS is high on the agenda.
The Swedish Energy Agency has been tasked with being the National Centre for CCS in Sweden. This entails planning, coordination and promotion of CCS throughout the country. The Swedish Energy Agency will carry out its work in dialogue with industries, governmental authorities and the Government Offices of Sweden.
The goal, according to the governmental report, is to capture and store two million tonnes of biogenic carbon dioxide per year by 2030. However, the feasible potential for BECCS in Sweden amounts to at least 10 million tonnes of biogenic carbon dioxide per year in a 2045 perspective.

Research and development on BECCS is increasing in Sweden. Urgency of climate change led to new motivation for CCS in Sweden. New framing of CCS underscores the potential for negative CO 2 emissions with BECCS. Sweden could benefit from carbon dioxide storage opportunities abroad.
According to the agency’s investigative report, the costs are estimated at SEK 1,100–2,000 per tonne of carbon dioxide. The state aid will cover costs for capture, transport and storage during a binding period of 15 years. In the report, the Swedish Energy Agency has deemed reversed auctioning as the most cost-effective support system.
