Energy and Environmental Engineering covers materials, processes, technologies and systems in support of a highly efficient and sustainable future. It is a branch of chemical engineering that seeks to efficiently use energy and to preserve and maintain the natural environment.
Moreover, advancements in energy chemical engineering provide strong support for battery research, including proof-of-concept prototype batteries, pilot production, and so on. Fig. 1. Schematics of Li-ion, Li–S, and Li–O 2 batteries based on non-aqueous liquid electrolytes.
There are increasing evidences of an irreversible and fast-proceeding transition in energy and chemical technologies [1, 2, 3], characterized from the progressive substitution of fossil fuels and the introduction of renewable energy sources (RES) and alternative carbon feeds [4, 5, 6, 7, 8].
In this latter regard, chemicals can act as energy carriers, storing and transporting renewable energy from regions of excess supply to demand areas (Fig. 4). Energy carriers are then converted back to electricity on-demand through fuel cells or gas turbines.
This can increase the interest and accessibility of other communities in energy systems engineering tools as well. Finally, research expertise in computational modeling and experimentation are often concentrated in separate groups and housed in different locations.
