Energy Vault has connected its 25 MW/100 MWh EVx gravity-energy storage system (GESS) in China. Once provincial and state approvals are obtained to start operating, it will become the world’s first commercial, utility-scale, non-pumped hydro GESS.
The 25 MW/100 MWh EVx™ Gravity Energy Storage System (GESS) is a 4-hour duration project. It is being built outside of Shanghai in Rudong, Jiangsu Province, China, and is under construction directly adjacent to a wind farm and national grid.
Gravity storage system provider Energy Vault ’s first commercial EVx GESS has been connected to the grid in China. Earlier this week, the company confirmed that the 25 MW/100 MWh EVx system, located in Rudong, China's Jiangsu province, was connected in December 2023, enabling full commissioning by State Grid Corp. of China.
The EVx ™ system is projected to achieve an impressive round-trip efficiency exceeding 80%. This places the new gravity system at the forefront of energy storage efficiency compared to alternative long duration energy storage methods such as mechanical, thermodynamic, compressed air, and flow battery systems.

Located outside of Shanghai in Rudong, Jiangsu Province, China, the 25 MW/100 MWh EVx GESS is built adjacent to a wind farm and a national grid interconnection site to augment and balance China’s national energy grid through the storage and delivery of renewable energy.
